New prints - November 2001 - Page 1

The "Holly's Back" etching is now available.

A new etching has just become available through BalletArt.com. It is a photograveure with drypoint that has been produced in a limited edition of fifty prints on high-quality art paper. On the right you may see master printer Janet Flohr applying ink to the plate as production begins at San Antonio's Hare and Hound Press. A recent proof of the image may be seen on the work-table in the foreground.

proofing hollys back
Detail of the hollys back etchingIn the image to the left, the final stage-proof is displayed. This image has just become available. Contact the artist, B. H. Giza, for information on purchasing. This image began its life in the late nineteen-eighties as a series of anatomical studies of dancer's backs, and especially one particularly lovely dancer. One drawing was chosen to be transferred to a plate via the photograveure etching method, and additional details were added by direct drypoint work on the plate. Then the plate was nickel-steel plated to ensure that the quality would remain perfect throughout the edition. After an approval by the artist, the master printers at Hare and Hound Press ran the edition, which became available in the first week of November, 2001.

hollys back final proof on the press bed

In the image above, you may see the copper-plate image on the press-bed. This was the final stage proof, shortly before the steel-plating process took place. After that, one final proof was generated, a "bon a tirrer" proof to authorize the production. Follow this link to see how the copper plates are generated, and take a look over the shoulder of the artist as the drawing develops.
